Steven LaPlante, Ph.D.
Principal Investigator
Steven is a senior biophysical and bioanalytical chemist with +20 years of drug design experience in the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, he is an NMR specialist with extensive applications of X-ray and molecular modeling. He has a proven track record of creating innovative solutions to challenging chemical and biological problems throughout industry and academia.
Currently, Steven's interests are in drug discovery, exposing drug aggregates/nano-entities and exploiting nano-properties for novel discovery strategies. Further interests include: monitoring nano-particles with regards to toxicology, elucidating metabolites, promoting atropisomer chirality, and understanding effects of climate change.
Steven's accomplishments include:
- Introducing the guidelines of atropisomer usage in Drug Discovery
- Developing novel strategies that led to discoveries of many drug candidates (HIV, HCV).
- Being the key inventor of advanced drugs for treating hepatitis C infection (Deleobuvir, Faldaprevir and Ciluprevir).
- Developing novel strategies for fragment-, structure- and property-based drug discovery.
- Discovering drug self-assemblies (nano-entities) with important implications for nano-biotechnology.
